The fastest way to get unstuck in your career:
Stop trying to think your way to clarity.
Career clarity comes from doing.
From trying something.
Talking to someone.
Taking on a new challenge.
Seeing what gives you energy and what does not.
Here are 6 simple actions you can take today:
1. Talk to your manager
Share with them your aspirations and what you're looking for. More responsibility. A different type of work. A new skill. If your manager doesn't know what you want, how can they ever help you get there?
2. Shadow a peer
Spend an hour watching how they work. What do they actually do all day? What skills matter?
What parts of the role are energizing? You may discover you want the job. You may also discover you don't. Both are useful signals.
3. Reach out to a mentor
Sometimes you need someone with more distance and experience to help you see the bigger picture. Ask what they would pay attention to. Ask what options you may not be seeing. If you don't have a mentor, start looking for one.
4. Take on a side project
A side project can tell you a lot. Do you enjoy the work? Are you good at it? Do you want to get better at it?
5. Step up where you are
You don't need a new title to step up. Lead a meeting. Own a problem. Volunteer for something. It doesn’t have to be big—just show initiative.
6. Learn something new
Don't learn something because it sounds impressive. Choose something that interests you and that you can apply this month. Then ask yourself: Did you enjoy using it? Did it make you better? Did it create new opportunities?
Clarity is not something you wait for.
You build it by taking action, paying attention, and adjusting as you go.
What has helped you get clearer about your next career move?
