Trust is easy to talk about.
These 7 everyday moments show how you earn it.
1. When you can't deliver on a commitment
Going silent only makes things worse.
Try: "I promised this by Friday, but I'm running behind. I can get it to you Tuesday. Does that still work?"
2. When someone makes a mistake
Your first reaction matters, avoid blaming.
Try: "Help me understand what happened. What can we do to prevent it next time?"
3. When someone disagrees with you
It's tempting to defend your position immediately.
Try: "That's different from how I see it. Tell me more about your thinking."
4. When a decision affects others
People shouldn't have to guess why something changed.
Try: "We made this decision because of [reason]. Here's what it means for the team. What concerns do you have?"
5. When someone deserves credit
Especially when they're not in the room.
Try: "Actually, that was Sarah's idea. She did a great job thinking it through."
6. When you don't have an answer
Guessing or giving incorrect information damages credibility.
Try: "I don't know yet. Let me find out and get back to you by Thursday."
7. When you've let someone down
An apology matters. What happens afterward matters even more.
Try: "I should have handled that differently. Here's what I got wrong and what I'll change."
None of these require a leadership title.
They're choices we make in everyday conversations, meetings, and emails.
And they're hardest to make when we're under pressure, short on time, or worried about how we'll be perceived.
Those are the moments people remember.
